  A survey on establishing Tomioka Silk Mill as a World Cultural Heritage site  On September 25th and 26th, an NGO (ICOMOS) began their survey on “Tomioka Silk Mill and Related Industrial Heritage” based in Gunma. The result of the survey is said to be very important when UNESCO decides the World Cultural Heritage site. The personnel in charge came to Japan and have seen the Silk Mill and related buildings. Tomioka Silk Mill was the first silk factory since the country was founded in Meiji 5 (1872). This factory exported lots of good quality threads and was instrumental in the growing use of silk around the world. UNESCO said that it hopes to establish Tomioka Silk Mill and its like as a world cultural heritage. After ICOMOS’s survey, opinions were gathered on whether it is a good idea to establish the Tomioka Silk Mill as a world cultural heritage. The results will be released in May next year. Subsequently, UNESCO will make the decision on establishing the Tomioka Silk Mill as a world cultural heritage in its conference next year.
